About the Department

The University of Chicago Research Computing Center (RCC), a unit in the Office of Research, provides high-end research computing resources to researchers at the University of Chicago. It is dedicated to enabling research by providing access to centrally managed High-Performance Computing (HPC), storage, and visualization resources. These resources include hardware, software, high-level scientific and technical user support, and the education and training required to help researchers make full use of modern HPC technology and local and national supercomputing resources. The Office of Research oversees the conduct of sponsored research, research program development, and contract management functions.

Job Summary

The job performs a variety of activities relating to software support and/or development. Provides analysis, design, development, debugging, and modification of computer code for end user applications, beta general releases, web pages, and production support. Troubleshoots problems using existing procedures to find a possible solution.

The Research Computing Center (RCC) is seeking a highly motivated Application Software Developer to work closely with faculty and researchers at the University of Chicago. The person in this position will be a software developer assisting with the development of and improvements to faculty and researchers' software projects. The successful candidate will contribute to the application development team's goal of successfully completing software development projects on time, maintain the team's application portfolio, assist with the creation of project specifications documentation and prototypes and do well in a mentoring environment while learning new technologies and systems.

This is a hybrid position requiring 3 days per week onsite.

Responsibilities


  • Develop and maintain web applications using technologies such as Python, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and relevant frameworks (e.g. React, Angular, etc.).

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy web and application software solutions using industry best practices and methodologies.
  • Build and maintain server-side applications using language such as python and ensure secure and efficient handling of data and application logic.
  • Work with the system team to maintain the on-premises infrastructure where app dev websites are hosted. Streamline the app dev DevOps lifecycle.
  • Administer, maintain, and contribute to WordPress sites created by the RCC.
  • Work closely with faculty to identify and develop applications that support or advance their research. Collaborate directly with faculty, researchers, users and RCC colleagues.
  • Define and document project requirement and deliverables. Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for development processes and operational procedures.
  • Develop, test, and debug new and existing applications.
  • Assist with the design, architecture and implementation of software solutions.
  • Support and maintain existing applications.
  • Utilize technical knowledge of existing and emerging technologies and platforms.
  • Develop applications within the group continuous integration and continuous delivery automation processes.
  • Suggest ideas and use practices and processes and technologies that allow development and operations of the team to work together to streamline product development.
  • Work as team player of the application development group. Peer review team members contribution.

  • Investigates, analyzes and resolves day-to-day technical problems using standard procedures.

  • Works with stakeholders to gather and analyze requirements for developmental programs. Receives a moderate level of guidance to design applications to meet University and business requirements.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:
  • Experience with Python programming language.
  • Experience with web development technologies (JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Docker, and frameworks.
  • Experience developing and integrating RESTful APIs to connect web applications with external services and data sources.
  • Experience with Git and in general with version control.
  • Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and knowledge of DevOps practices and tools (e.g., CI/CD pipelines).

Technical Skills or Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of Linux/UNIX systems and shell scripting.
  • Skillful at developing, designing, deploying and supporting applications.
  • Basic knowledge of relational and non-relational (NoSQL) databases such as MySQL, PostreSQL, MongoDB, and Cassandra.
  • Identify and gain expertise in appropriate new technologies and/or software tools.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to understand and translate researchers' scientific goals into technical requirements.
