The University of Iowa Healthcare, Care Coordination Division is seeking an Assistant Nurse Manager for the Inpatient Nurse Navigator and Emergency Department Nurse Navigator Teams. The Assistant Nurse Manager will assist in facilitating the progression of care across the continuum for the hospitalized patients through collaboration with the interdisciplinary team which includes but is not limited to patient care staff, providers, patient support, family, and community resources.

Position Responsibilities

  • Hire or assist in hiring nursing staff through effective and timely recommendations.
  • Coach staff to participate in team decision-making and actively seek participation from assigned staff on decision-making and customer service improvement activities.
  • Develop and manage the talents, strengths and behaviors of assigned staff as directed by the Nurse Manager.
  • Assists in matters of promotion, transfers, and disciplinary action, as directed by the Nurse Manager
  • Partner with Nurse Manager regarding staff evaluations to ensure on time completion with written, solid justification.
  • Assure staff members are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Understand and apply appropriately the provisions in the union contracts.
  • Ensure that all employees are treated with respect and in a manner consistent with University policies related to equal employment opportunity and diversity.
  • Encourage staff/employees to meet or exceed customer needs and expectations.
  • Develop expertise on matters regarding length of stay metrics, medical necessity reviews, care progression, and compliance with governmental and private pay regulations.
  • Maintain an understanding of third-party coverage with respect to Medicare, Commercial and Medicaid policies and procedures.
  • Review financial reports and provide insights to budget variances to leaders.
  • Assist the Nurse Manager in developing a staffing plan
  • Be open to creativity in staff scheduling/flexibility
  • Participate in division-wide budget preparation including calculation of projected costs and expenses.
  • Assist to identify workflows for applying medical necessity guidelines for most appropriate level of care for Emergency Department point of entry patients.
  • Partner with Nurse Manager and Nursing Practice Leader to facilitate related training and education. This is inclusive of annual competency planning.
  • Educate hospital staff and physicians about discharge barriers that impact length of stay and discharge planning.
  • Provide feedback to staff regarding documentation in patient charts within Electronic Medical Record.
  • Review medical records of patients identified by case managers (RN or SW) or as requested by the healthcare team to perform quality overview.
  • Collaborate with nurse leaders to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement.
  • Implement and maintain standards and quality plans.
  • Identify inefficiencies in current practice/processes, demonstrate tolerance for change and develop a means to enhance the process.
  • Make sound judgments after gathering factual, objective information.
  • Create and maintain a workplace of choice/ which motivates employees to work at optimal efficiency; encourages staff to regularly establish goals and objectives toward career development.
  • Assist the Nurse Manager in developing flexible staffing and reallocating priorities to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Assist and train staff in performing reviews of anticipated admissions utilizing standardized medical necessity criteria to assess the appropriate level of care assignment.
  • Serve as content expert and resource for inpatient patient throughput initiatives including unit huddles, documentation, coordination with internal/external stakeholders
  • Serve as a resource to patients, physicians, administrators, and hospital employees regarding issues related to patient classification and reimbursement.
  • Assist staff in understanding and reviewing patient care plan based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.
  • Assist staff in discharge planning (referrals) for individuals with continuum of care needs (Home Care, DME, IV antibiotics, enteral feeds, etc).
  • Assist with length of stay management and utilization of resources.
  • Collaborate with nursing leaders to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans.
  • Use customer feedback in planning and providing service.
  • Work collaboratively with Social Work leadership to manage social issues that impact the transition planning needs, discharge barriers or complex cases.
  • Provide education to physicians and other clinicians related to regulatory requirements, appropriate utilization of hospital services, and community resources.
  • Function as a resource to the Emergency Department and communicate new information regarding case management, managed care, and the continuum of care.
  • Act as a resource for staff and providers regarding decisions relative to appropriateness of hospitalization, level of care, length of stay and use of resources.
  • Collaborate with health care professionals (managers, administrators, schedulers, internal and external providers, and other care coordinators) to facilitate smooth transitions of care.
  • Provide clinical information to relevant clinical team members regarding patient needs and/or newly identified issues.
  • Communicate with physicians, staff, and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations.
  • Provide evaluative feedback for staff members and health care students.
  • Coach staff in implementation of standards of care, professional development, promotes staff specialty & clinical certifications, adherence to the standards of regulatory bodies (i.e., The Joint Commission, OSHA, and other regulatory bodies as appropriate)
  • Support evidence-based practice research initiatives by facilitating the incorporation of quality management and evidence-based practices in nursing care.
  • Support changes in nursing care using evidence-based practice.
Percent of Time: 100%

Schedule: 40 hours per week, 8-hour shifts 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.
  • 1+ years of nursing experience with demonstrated skills in leadership.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience with case management.
  • Experience leading/managing transitions in care.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with computer software applications (i.e. Microsoft Office)
  • Demonstrated ability of time management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail and thoroughness.
  • Demonstrated effective teaching skills for staff and patient education.
  • Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so.
Desired Qualifications
  • Professional Master of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA).
  • Minimum 3 years of Clinical RN experience.
  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body is desired.
  • Experience and knowledge with Medicare Guidelines of outpatient observation and 2 midnight rule is desired.
  • Experience working in EPIC.
