ESR is hiring an Assistant Professor of Spirituality

Job Summary:

Earlham School of Religion (ESR), Richmond, Indiana, a seminary in the Quaker tradition, is hiring a full-time, faculty position in spirituality to start July 1, 2025.

We are seeking a teacher, scholar, and practitioner capable of teaching and mentoring at the intersection of formation, contemplation, and action.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced graduate classes, including a survey course of spirituality (e.g., history of spirituality), a spiritual formation course, discernment of call and gifts, and perhaps an introduction to spiritual direction. The standard teaching load is six courses per year, which includes this spread of courses in spirituality, as well as courses that contribute to other parts of the curriculum, in consultation with the dean. Particular courses will depend on the hire's expertise and interest, but they might include Quaker spirituality, eco-spirituality, conflict transformation, or creative arts courses that contribute to the Masters of Arts: Theopoetics and Writing.

Qualifications
  • A completed Ph.D. in spirituality and/or a related discipline is preferred, but ABD in the same subject area may also be acceptable, provided the degree is in hand within one year of employment. A Doctor of Ministry in spirituality would also be considered. Candidates with deep experience in spiritual direction or spiritual formation, who also hold a Masters of Divinity or equivalent degree, may also be considered.
  • The successful candidate need not be Quaker, but should understand, respect, and be excited to teach within the Quaker ethos. At ESR, that means candidates should approach spirituality as a lived and interfaith subject, not as simply an area of intellectual inquiry.
  • Candidates must demonstrate an ability to teach in face-to-face, synchronous video (Zoom), and online learning environments. ESR offers courses during the normal academic year in these formats, as well as in intensives in August, January, and May. ESR programs include an M.Div. with several concentrations, an academic MA degree, a practical MA in peace and social transformation, an MA in theopoetics and writing, and a certificate in spiritual formation.
  • Candidates must be committed to working within a Quaker ethos that values integrity, consensus decision-making, equity, justice, and peacemaking. Additionally, candidates should have both the disposition and intellectual range to engage a theologically diverse student body that includes, for example, LGBTQ+ trinitarians, post-evangelicals, unaffiliated seekers, and non-theist Friends.
  • Be a positive example and resource to all ESR Students
