Additionally, R&DE comprises 735 FTE staff in the following divisions: The Office of the Senior Associate Vice Provost, Student Housing, Stanford Dining, Stanford Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Stanford Conferences, and a team of R&DE strategic business partners: Finance & Administration, Human Resources, Information Technology, Communications, and Maintenance Operations and Capital Projects.

JOB PURPOSE:

Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, the incumbent performs all facets of general carpentry and millwork/cabinet making work including fabrication, installation, repair of doors, door frames, cabinets, all types of casework including countertops, customer service desks, mail distribution centers, food service casework, cash register stands, replication and installation of wood windows, interior paneling, molding, trim work, stairs, and related finish carpentry for all Residential and Dining Enterprises facilities. Incumbent also performs general carpentry and related work including framing, structural and cosmetic repairs, modifications, and demolition of existing installations. Carpentry work is performed in and on R&DE facilities including residence halls, apartments, Dining and Hospitality facilities, offices, and meeting spaces under R&DE management including scheduled work and emergency repair services during normal work hours and after-hours.

Work is assigned through work orders assigned to individuals. Work may be performed from sketches, verbal instructions, or replicating existing construction means and methods. Work may be inspected for satisfactory compliance with instructions and workmanship qualify; routine repairs and construction are usually made independently without direct oversight.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs all facets of general maintenance carpentry including framing, formwork, dry rot repair, siding, and exterior trim installation and repairs, installation and repairs to windows, doors, door frames.

  • Performs all aspects of cabinetmaking and finish carpentry including fabrication and repair of casework, countertops, furniture, plastic laminate work, trim and finish work.

  • Repairs all types of furniture including cabinets, tables, shelves, desks, bookcases, bulletin boards, chairs.

  • May fabricate special wooden parts and furniture components as well such as window sash, custom screens, etc.

  • May prepare furniture for refinishing including the fabrication of new parts and finish the removal.

  • Able to accurately troubleshoot causes of failures in furniture, doors, windows, and other assemblies. Demonstrates ability to restore assemblies to original operating condition and appearance using original construction techniques/methods.

  • Proficient in the appropriate, safe, precise use of the tools of the trade including power tools and hand tools.
  • Able to plan and layout work accurately, perform accurate material take-offs, plan for the efficient use of materials, take accurate measurements, produce accurate sketches of proposed work.

  • Able to consistently produce high-quality work - plumb, level, square, scribe cut, produce tight joints employing joinery techniques appropriate to the task, produce exceptional finish work.

  • Able to identify and select appropriate wood species and grades for specific applications, matching wood species when custom fabricating furniture parts.

  • Able to identify, select, and use appropriate fastening techniques, joinery, and adhesives appropriate to the task. Glues fit and clamps parts and subassemblies together to form a complete unit, using clamps.

  • Is knowledgeable in setting up a carpentry/cabinet shop, the care, and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, establishing safe work areas around each piece of stationary equipment.

  • Able to read and interpret plans, sketches, and shop drawings for milling and fabrication.

  • Able to set up and operate various types of machinery such as table saws, shapers, joiners, planers, band saws, routers, and related equipment.
  • Knowledgeable in finish-sanding, staining, and sealing wood surfaces, cabinets, furniture.

  • Able to precisely install hardware, hinges, catches, and drawer pulls, fit cabinet doors, and drawers to casework.

  • Able to coordinate work projects with other trades to ensure proper task sequencing and a successful project outcome.

  • Maintains a positive service approach with consistent follow-through producing reliable results.

Qualifications:

  • Valid California driver's license.

  • Graduation from high school.

  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a journeyman cabinet maker and finish carpenter; or an equivalent combination of both training and experience.

  • Ability to perform at journey person level in the carpentry trade.

  • Knowledge of building codes in his/her trade.

  • Must be able to operate two-way radio for communication.

  • Must be able to follow written and oral instruction.

  • Wears protective equipment and clothing as needed.

  • Operates power tools utilizing safe work practices.

  • Must be capable of learning and applying safe work practices, including but not limited to: hazardous waste management and handling, Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Confined Space procedures, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and chemical safe practices.

  • Possess the physical ability to perform various maintenance and moving tasks including, but not limited to working from step ladders, ability to lift heavy (50 lbs.) materials frequently each day, working overhead, kneeling, stooping, standing, crawling, or sitting for long periods of time, work in all types of weather.

  • Ability to respond to changing priorities; respond to emergency calls at night and on weekends as assigned.

  • Willing to work variable shifts at night or on weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Documented successful completion of cabinet/millworker apprenticeship program or similar formal training in cabinet-making.

  • Documented experience in producing commercial custom casework working at a journey-level position.

The expected pay for this position is $45.89 (Step 1) per hour.

Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

BU: Internal candidate rates will be applied based on the CBA language for promotion and transfer.
