Job Summary/Basic Function:
Serve as the chief administrator (Director) for Counseling Services, which includes the following client services: individual and couple counseling, consultation, psychological evaluation, teaching, and training of post graduate and graduate interns and trainees, policy and protocol development and enforcement, standardizing processes and paperwork, overseeing all outreach, education and suicide awareness trainings. Additionally, this position provides direct counseling services and supervision of all staff and serves as a campus resource on mental health benchmark practices and behavioral interventions.
Essential Functions:
30% of the time the Counseling Services, Director must:
Provide Supervision

  • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, evaluation, and retention of staff.
  • Oversee management, training, and evaluation of part time, temporary, intern and student staff.
  • Provide clear and logical direction in staff work assignments and hold staff accountable.
  • Maintain open communications with staff about administrative policies, procedures and job performance expectations.
  • Seek out and provide educational/advancement opportunities for staff.
40% of the time the Counseling Services, Director must:
Implement Departmental Vision and Direction
  • In concert with the Executive Director, create and articulate shared priorities, goals and objectives for the integrations and coordination of care across areas of Health Services.
  • Communicate with staff the essential role each plays in fulfilling HS and campus priorities.
  • Build consensus among staff regarding integration of care across all of HS, service development and enhancement, staff development, policy development and implementation, risk management issues, etc.
  • Consult, collaborate and plan with members of the university community concerning potential development of new programs and services.
  • Conduct unit evaluation to identify areas of strength and areas for further integration, enhancement and growth.
  • Serve as a committed and passionate leader in enhancing our mental health continuum and integrations with other areas of HS.
  • Establish, create and enforce standardizations and policies and procedures for the Counseling Services department.
10% of the time the Counseling Services, Director must:
Conduct Clinical Counseling
  • Provide direct consultation to students, faculty, staff, administration and parents on a variety of psychological issues and problems.
  • Consult with clinical staff members on clinical issues as needed, especially those concerning danger to self or others.
  • Provide counseling services, psychological assessments, and crisis intervention.
10% of the time the Counseling Services, Director must:
Perform Fiscal Management
  • In conjunction with the Executive Director, assist in the annual review and revision of the Counseling Operating and Capital budgets.
  • Monitor and redirect expenditures, as necessary.
  • In conjunction with the Executive Director and Business Manager, develop long range business plans and forecasts including revenue generation and recommendations for staffing.
  • Support and enhance the payment model and billing for Counseling Services.
10% of the time the Counseling Services, Director must:
Develop and Maintain Professional Relationships and Responsibilities
  • Serve as Counseling Services' public relations representative through personal appearances and general communication.
  • Establish collaborative programming and teaching/training sessions with academic areas across campus, as needed.
  • Lead in forging relationships and collaborations with other leaders both inside and outside of HS.
  • Keep abreast of current developments in the counseling profession through reading, research, staff development opportunities, best practices and involvement in appropriate professional associations.
  • Serve on various committees and task forces as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Possess advanced knowledge of integrated and collaborative mental health services and delivery models in a university setting. Additionally, they must have a superior working knowledge of the industry "best practices."
  • Possess superior organizational, management and leadership skills. This position is responsible for coordinating, integrating, and motivating a highly skilled and diverse professional staff. Attention to detail and problem solving skills are essential.
  • Possess, and have the ability to perform, teach and mentor, superior counseling skills including empathy, listening, problem solving and a wide repertoire of intervention and assessment strategies. Additionally they must have knowledge of various methods of case analysis, theoretical orientations, and clinical supervisory models.
  • Possess budgetary and financial skills for managing a budget with varied sources of revenue. Fiscal analysis and forecasting, and the ability to incorporate financial implications into strategic vision, are critical to this position.
  • Possess exemplary customer service skills with the ability and willingness to communicate with a wide variety of customers, colleagues, and personnel. Exceptional writing and communication skills and the ability to speak well and teach in public settings and meetings are essential.
  • The Director must value and show leadership and passion for a collaborative and well coordinated model of health care which integrates counseling and mental health with the primary care/medical and Wellness models. This model is progressive and requires an understanding of the need to clearly identify scope of practice and training for all staff and adequately and cooperatively to enhance the positive treatment outcomes for our patients and clients.
  • Remain abreast of all HIPAA, FERPA, state, federal and local legislation regarding mental health services, medical records release and storage, and all confidentiality guidelines. This needs to be balanced with reasonable attempts to release information as needed in times of crisis.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent plus 8 Years experience including 5 Years managerial experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education:
  • A terminal degree in their respective field of education that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perfom the essential functions of the position.
AND

Experience:
  • Current and unencumbered licensure (or license eligible) as a Psychologist or Advanced License Counselor / Social Worker in the State of Idaho.
  • Must be eligible for credentialing in the supervision of interns and other licensed professionals.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience providing leadership to a department of Counseling Services at a Director level or higher.
  • Three (3) years experience providing clinical supervision to counseling professionals.
  • Demonstrated fiscal responsibility and ability to oversee multiple budgets.
