Chief Objective of Position:

The Counselor-in-Residence is responsible for the following: assist students in defining and accomplishing personal and academic goals; provide counseling, crisis response support; assist students in overcoming specific personal, educational or behavioral problems that interfere with healthy living and success at the University; support the development of students by helping all students enhance their growth potential and thereby benefit from their academic and social environment; and, offer preventative support by anticipating environmental conditions that may negatively influence student welfare and to initiate interventions that will neutralize such conditions.

Work Tasks:

  • Provide individual and group counseling, consultation, and outreach focused on counseling and developmental needs and and issues of students.
  • Provide crisis response intervention support to students in need.
  • Provide psycho-education about anxiety, depression, stress, emotional regulation, relationships, eating concerns, substance abuse, sexual assault another topics of concern to the welfare of students.
  • Provide consulting services as needed concerning student issues related to counseling, development and behavior management in the residential community.
  • Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and relations with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, administrators, other employees, other agency personnel and community members.
  • Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully supports the "Student's First" value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service.
  • Completed all work in a timely, efficient and accurate manner.
  • Safety issues are reviewed and communicated to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absence.
  • Follow workplace safety regulations and adhere to applicable standards, processes, and programs established for your position.
  • Immediately report unsafe work conditions and work-related incidents to your supervisor and participate in accident investigation requests.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) related to position:

  • Knowledge concerning individual and group counseling theory and practice.
  • Skills in providing individual and group counseling.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong abilities in counseling, consulting and communication.
Required Education:

Master's degree in counseling, counselor education, or a closely related discipline, at time of start date.

Course work and appropriate training should include individual and group counseling, clinical theory, psychopathology, and standards of ethical practice.

Additional Consideration - Education:

Course work or training in working with anxiety, depression, adjustment, trauma, identity concerns, substance abuse and at-risk suicide populations.

Experience Required:

Experience in providing individual counseling.

Additional Consideration - Experience:

  • Experience in providing individual and group counseling in a college/university setting.
  • Experience in providing consultation and psycho-educational outreach for resident advisors and residential populations.
  • Experience in behavioral management techniques to assist students experiencing difficulty in adjusting to the university environment.
Salary Information:

Starting at $49,500, commensurate with education and experience.
