Job Description:


The School of Computing in the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University (The State University of New York at Binghamton) invites applications for the Director's position with an expected start date in the summer of 2025. The Director of the School is the top administrator of the School of Computing.

The Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University is one of the fastest growing engineering colleges in the nation. With its strong record of research funding and scholarship, Watson College is home to nationally and internationally recognized faculty scholars and research centers. Binghamton University has recently made substantial investments to grow faculty and staff numbers within Watson College while also significantly increasing and updating the college's research facilities. Watson College is poised to leverage these investments to further advance research and education and establish itself as a nationally and internationally visible leader in existing and emerging areas of research.


In Fall 2024 our Computer Science Department has become the School of Computing to reflect its fast growth and a strong commitment for further expansion from the college and university leadership. The School of Computing has well-established Ph.D. and M.S. programs in Computer Science, an ABET accredited B.S. program in Computer Science, and an M.S. program in Information Systems. Both Computer Science and Information Systems programs have been experiencing rapid growth in both student enrollment and faculty size in recent years. In the past three years, 15 tenure-track faculty members and 10 lecturers were added to the school. Four additional tenure-track faculty members are expected to join the School of Computing in 2025. The School of Computing is ranked between 201-250 in the world by the recent THE (Times Higher Education) world ranking. The school currently has 51 full-time faculty members, about 800 undergraduate students, over 600 MS students and over 80 PhD students. Faculty members excel in research in the areas of computer systems, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity and have a significant record of success in external funding, with eight faculty members receiving the NSF CAREER Award in recent years and significant annual research funding from a variety of agencies. Faculty members of the school are also leaders in a number of campus-wide research and education centers such as the NSF Industry-University Collaborative Research Center (IUCRC) on Energy-Smart Electronic Systems; Center for Imaging, Acoustics, and Perception Science; Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity; a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research (CAE-R) designated by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security; and an NSF CyberCorp Scholarship for Service (SFS) site. Binghamton University has a Data Science Transdisciplinary Area of Excellence (TAE), which will provide opportunities for collaboration across the entire campus. Requirements:


Applicants for the position of the School Director must have a Ph.D. degree in computer science or a closely related area, and must be qualified to be tenured at the Full Professor level. Candidates should have a strong research record and significant leadership experience such as department chair, associate department chair, associate director or associate dean of a school/college, and/or a director of a significant research center. Candidates with experience as a program manager/director at federal funding agencies, such as NSF, NIH, or DARPA, are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates must have a strong record of collaboration and leadership in externally funded scholarship, teaching, and service at all levels. Experiences in personnel cases (tenure and promotion), budgeting and fundraising are highly desirable. To be competitive for this position, candidates must demonstrate the skills and vision necessary to advance and grow the premier education and research programs of this School and have a commitment to excellence in teaching at the BS, MS, and PhD levels.
