The Role

The Advanced Propulsion team is seeking a highly skilled and experienced technical leader to spearhead the development of the next generation of fast attack submarines, including the future VIRGINIA Class and SSNX. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the design of innovative components and systems, enhancing capabilities, performance, and maintainability.

As a key advisor to the design team, the successful candidate will provide technical oversight and guidance throughout the design process for propulsion plant components. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of the component design life cycle, from conception to manufacture and testing, with a strong background in propulsion plant systems integration.

The successful candidate will have a well-established relationship with Electric Boat or the ability to build one, as collaboration on design products is vital to the role's success. Additionally, experience with and the ability to develop relationships with the supply base is critical to ensure seamless integration of components and systems, and to maintain a strong network of partnerships that support the project's objectives.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience
Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

1. Specific knowledge of submarine propulsion plant design, with additional knowledge of CVN 68 Class and CVN 78 Class designs being a plus.
2. Direct technical expertise with heat exchangers, valves, pumps, generators, and steam turbines.
3. Proficient in technical writing and responsible for the review and overall ownership of the team's written deliverables.
4. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for providing frequent briefs to leadership at NNS and external parties.
5. Operational experience on commissioned or under-construction Navy vessels is a plus.
6. Experience with and the ability to develop relationships with Electric Boat and the supply base is critical for successful collaboration and project execution.
