Summary/Objective

Martin Marietta is currently looking for an Environmental Engineer to be responsible for the management of environmental compliance and permitting within the southern half of the Ohio District. Locations served are throughout the middle and western Tennessee and Kentucky areas. The Ideal candidate will work as a strategic partner with production staff and provide skilled services to achieve desired environmental management priorities.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for local, State and Federal permitting and reporting; environmental plan development (SWPPP, SPCC, etc.), employee training, regulatory and corporate policy compliance; audits and inspections of sites; ongoing improvement related to air/water/land quality, wetlands, floodplains, water appropriation and associated environmental media; assist with mine planning and real estate management.
  • Administer the process of applying for permits related to mining activity, including coordination with management, legal staff, and local/state regulators, across all regulatory programs, including air quality, water rights, process and stormwater discharge, Army Corps, floodplain and wetlands, and endangered species.
  • Assist in the process of property acquisition and divestiture, including coordination with management, legal staff and buyer/seller to coordinate all due diligence efforts, including Phase I/II investigations, management of lead and asbestos abatement and/or demolition contractors.
  • Manage all permit conditions/requirements and critical dates, including stack tests, and discharge monitoring reports.
  • Monitor sites for environmental best practices, water discharge, oil storage, and waste management compliance; renew or amend permits as needed.
  • Represent Martin Marietta at permit actions, public hearings if requested, including formal presentations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with regulators (local city/county staff).
  • Maintain mine permits, along with land management team where required, and coordinate the associated reclamation activities.
  • Promote the Martin Marietta safety culture.
  • Provide technical assistance to production staff and management.

    Work Environment

    This job operates both in the office and in the field (mine sites, government offices, residences). This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, scanners/photocopiers, filing cabinets. Routine travel by car between appointments and sites. Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, cold, wet or dry). Some exposure to dust, noise, sand, gravel, water, diesel exhaust, etc. Potential for long hours in vehicle.

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds from ground to waist, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, manual dexterity, repetitive motion, standing, sitting (must be able to sit for extended periods of time up to 8 hours), walking, climbing stairs, bending and stooping, tolerate working outdoors in all environmental temperatures and weather, able to tolerate working at heights up to 100 feet and the ability to drive.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

    This is a full-time position that may require long hours and weekend work.

    Travel

    Frequent travel in Tennessee and Kentucky will be required, approximately 20-30% of time in the field, generally scheduled at the employee's discretion and to participate in meetings and inspections. Out-of-area and overnight travel will be expected from time to time.

    Required Education and Experience

    • Bachelors of Science Degree in an engineering discipline. PE license preferred, but not required.
    • 3+ years of prior experience with environmental assessment or compliance.
    • Prior experience in the aggregates industry preferred, and AutoCAD experience is helpful.
