Job Description

The purpose of this role is to assist us with the implementation and use of a new Raman Spectrometer. The summer intern will be asked to generate data for a large number of samples. The data plotting and interpretation will require Chemometric analysis (cluster analysis) of various samples and blends of samples. The proposed outcome will be a two dimensional mapping system that will allow us to determine the purity of unknown samples by comparing the results by using Chemometric analysis.

Essential Functions

  • Students completing the second or third year in chemistry/material science.
  • Previous experience working in a laboratory environment (including academic lab courses).
  • Understanding and implementation of safe laboratory practices.
  • Candidates must be comfortable working in a laboratory.
  • Basic computer proficiency is required including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Desire to innovate and achieve excellence in research.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a larger team.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with peers, supervisors, and external collaborators.
  • Guided research direction for project in collaboration with direct supervisor.
  • Candidates must have mechanical ability and find motor skills.
  • Ability to document testing activities in lab notebook.
  • Maintain a well organized workspace.
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written).
  • Effective time management.
Education Qualifications
  • Required High School or Equivalent
  • Required Associate's Degree : Completed within the last year and 1+ year(s) of work experience (preferred).
  • Preferred Bachelor's Degree : Current Junior studying chemistry or material science.
  • Master's Degree : Completed before the start of the summer internship program.
  • PhD : Completed before the start of the summer internship program.
Experience Qualifications
  • Required 1+ years Lab experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Previous experience working in a laboratory environment (including academic lab courses).

Working Conditions/Physical Demands
  • Must be able to lift and carry or otherwise move 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) Safety glasses and a laboratory coat.
  • Must be able to wear latex or similar gloves.

Intern pay is non-negotiable and is calculated based on current academic class standing $17/hour (Freshman) - $20/hour (Senior), etc.
