Job Title: Laboratory Technician

Job Type: Contract

Location: New Hyde Park, New York 11042

Shift: 5:00 PM - 1:00 AM

Days: Monday - Friday, with possible Saturday shifts

Pay: Competitive and Dependent on Experience

Specific Duties:

• Access and verify previously accessioned orders in the Orders Management System.
• Make corrections to orders as needed before receiving them into the Lab System.
• Receive orders electronically into the Lab System.
• Place barcode labels appropriately onto received specimens.
• Centrifuge specimens as required.
• Prepare and label aliquots of specimens for freezing or split sampling.
• Distribute prepared specimens to various laboratory departments.
• Prepare send-out manifests for reference lab work and pack specimens according to the manifest.
• Contact the reference lab to verify specimen requirements and arrange special handling of specimens.
• Alert the supervisor to improperly collected or mislabeled specimens.
• Expedite add-on testing by locating previously collected specimens and building orders.
• Perform phlebotomy on a limited emergent basis if properly trained.
• Maintain a chain of custody for irreplaceable specimens according to Optum policies.
• Maintain patient confidentiality.
• Rectify reference lab pending logs and post results held in the fix queue.
• Perform related work as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience in a laboratory or medical environment.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and laboratory information systems.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry.
• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA regulations.
• Certification as a Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) is a plus.
