Lecturer 1 - ASL

Boise State University invites interested applicants for the position of Lecturer in American Sign Language (ASL). This is a renewable, nine-month contract, consisting of 12 credits of teaching and three units of service per semester, which includes serving as ASL Program Coordinator. The successful candidate will have experience teaching a wide range of ASL courses including beginning to advanced language courses, a demonstrated knowledge of proficiency-oriented methodologies and expertise in new technologies, cross-cultural sensitivity, a dedication to program building-including outreach to area high schools and/or the local deaf community-and a strong commitment to professional development. The successful candidate will effectively coordinate the scheduling and staffing of all courses offered by the ASL Section, as well as ensure student advising and oversee the continued development of the program's curriculum. The position start date is August 2025.

Department overview:

Located in the Albertsons Library building at the heart of the Boise State campus alongside the Boise River, the Department of World Languages is home to a vibrant, passionate group of faculty teaching twelve different languages and the many vibrant cultures conveyed by and in those languages. Students can earn majors in French, German and Spanish, as well as minors and certificates in Arabic, ASL, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Portuguese and Spanish. The department also offers elementary Bosnian. In addition to faculty and staff offices, the department houses the World Languages Resource Center (WLRC) where students meet for conversation labs and have access to more than 1,200 films, authentic language books and games, recording equipment, and mobile tablets and devices for use in and out of the classroom.

Minimum qualifications:

• M.A. in ASL, Deaf Studies or related field;
• Native or near-native fluency in ASL and written English;
• Ability to serve as Faculty Advisor to the ASL Club and Concurrent Enrollment Liaison (in local school districts).

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience teaching at the beginning, intermediate and advanced level of ASL language instruction;
• Ability to teach ASL Culture and/or Deaf Studies classes;
• Leadership acumen involving supervising others, coordinating schedules and identifying and implementing program initiatives.

Salary and Benefits:
