The Product Support and Logistics Division (PSLD) is one of the most innovative divisions within Caterpillar. In PSLD, as within all of Caterpillar, our priority is our customers and helping them build a better world. We touch nearly every element of the services value stream from procurement to design and manufacturing to distribution. PSLD is responsible for Aftermarket Parts DistributionofCat Parts, Integrated Logistics, segment Procurementand thedesign andmanufactureof Wear Components (Undercarriage and GET) and Maintenance Components (Seals, Tubes & Hardware, Hose & Couplings, Fluids and Filters).

As the Manager, Value Chain Engineering you will manage engineering support to design product value chain and resource planning, working with Logistics, Operations, Product and Process Engineering, Product Support and Lifecycle Management in order to achieve customer availability requirements and internal financial commitments.

What You Will Do:
  • Managing staffing, development, and performance management programs for value chain engineering teams; motivating and developing project and team leaders.
  • Designing and implementing the end-to-end value chain for a product with a keen focus on inventory, assurance of supply, cost and quality.
  • Managing high-impact, long duration value chain engineering continuous improvement initiatives and projects; ensuring achievement of engineering plan and product quality.
  • Managing risk and recovery related to foreseeable and unforeseeable value chain disruptions.
  • Other duties as assigned by Caterpillar management from time-to-time.

What You Have (Basic Qualifications):
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science.
  • Business Acumen: Knowledge of business concepts, tools, and processes that are needed for making sound decisions in the context of the company's business; ability to apply this knowledge appropriately to diverse situations.
    • Designs the organization's planning processes and decision-making channels.
    • Explains business issues and trends of own business unit as compared to other business units.
    • Demonstrates a big picture understanding of the business, its interrelationships, and priorities.
    • Demonstrates strong foundation of business fundamentals, measurement, and business finance.
    • Develops business cases for own function, reviews and critiques cases for other functions.
    • Explains advantages and risks of using business simulations for critical business decisions.
  • Planning: Tactical & Strategic: Knowledge of effective planning techniques and ability to contribute to operational (short term), tactical (1-2 years) and strategic (3-5 years) planning in support of the overall business plan.
    • Develops, refines, and communicates tactical plans for own responsibilities.
    • Provides the right level of detail as input for strategic plan development.
    • Demonstrates the value and necessity of linking tactical plans to overall strategic plan.
    • Ensures attention to the detail and dependencies of existing departmental-level plans.
    • Plans for allocation of resources in line with unit goals, technical and business objectives.
    • Ensures the planning process is integrated with the overall business plan.
  • Process Management: Knowledge of business process improvement tools and techniques; ability to understand, monitor, update, control, or enhance existing business or work processes.
    • Helps others learn the tools and techniques for process value analysis.
    • Carries out process evaluation, diagnosis, and optimization.
    • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of a major process flow, its components and issues.
    • Synchronizes the efforts of, and resource requirements for, several teams within a process.
    • Makes the business case for new processes, including their cost-benefit ratios.
    • Possesses knowledge of tools and techniques for designing and implementing new processes.
  • Quality Management: Knowledge of quality management methods, tools, and techniques and ability to create and support an environment that meets the quality goals of the organization.
    • Utilizes quality indicators relevant to own unit or function.
    • Adheres to organizational quality management processes and practices.
    • Applies key aspects of continuous improvement processes and evaluates impact on quality.
    • Uses quality evaluation tools and techniques such as walkthroughs and inspections.
    • Works with quality assurance methods, tools and techniques.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
    • Analyzes and discusses alternatives with multiple stakeholders.
    • Monitors developments in critical-thinking and decision-making models for potential use by organization.
    • Coaches' others in decision-making models, processes, and practices.
    • Anticipates special issues and considerations for effective decision-making during a crisis.
    • Shares experiences regarding optimal timing and circumstances for refraining from or making decisions.
    • Differentiates between content and context of a decision.
  • Capacity Planning & Management: Knowledge of tools, approaches and practices for determining production demand and ability to manage resources needed to provide satisfactory levels of service.
    • Works with R&D (research & development) staff to plan resource and capacity requirements for products under development.
    • Creates consolidated forecasts for multiple product lines and production facilities.
    • Advises on multiple cycles of short- and long-term capacity planning for product or site.
    • Compares and contrasts alternative approaches and tools for capacity planning.
    • Develops estimates and costs for incremental capacity requirements.
    • Translates demand forecasts into production and capacity requirements.
  • Industrial Engineering: Knowledge of industrial engineering processes, techniques and methods; ability to design and implement various processes and support infrastructures that safely realize a desired objective or invention.
    • Assesses possible root causes of the failure of a certain manufacturing system or process.
    • Collects basic production and safety capability information of current manufacturing processes and systems.
    • Works with basic, routine components of the industrial engineering discipline in manufacturing.
    • Follows relevant standards, policies, and practices to identify and report industrial engineering issues.
    • Discusses operational industrial engineering issues and considerations regarding manufacturing.
  • Strategic Sourcing: Knowledge of strategic sourcing methods, technologies and processes; ability to analyze, improve and re-evaluate organizational procurement process continuously.
    • Participates in monitoring the execution for all stages of the strategic sourcing process.
    • Trains others on strategic sourcing in multiple and diverse environments.
    • Designs and develops standard supplier agreements and procurement policies with standardized terms and conditions.
    • Works with complex strategic sourcing components including but not limited to negotiations, contracting, and continuous process improvement and implementation.
    • Consults on strategic sourcing methods in relation to business relationships, inter-dependencies and integration.
    • Develops and explains strategic sourcing best practices and rationale for the organization and industry.
What You Have (Preferred Qualifications):
  • Previous progressively responsible experience in Supply Chain, Engineering, Procurement and/or Manufacturing.
  • Experience leading global teams to drive substantial process and cultural changes.
  • Previous experience working with suppliers.
