The Department of English is seeking a Managing Editor of The Iowa Review.

The Managing Editor of the Iowa Review will manage publication of the literary journal The Iowa Review (TIR), including editing manuscripts; supervising design, production, and printing; supervising student staff and interns; and working with staff to coordinate website, social media, and other publicity efforts. This position is also responsible for the day-to-day management of TIR's office, including supervision of 4 graduate student editors and hiring and supervision of 4 undergraduate interns. With the exception of the bulk of submission evaluation and developmental editing (done by student editors and the Editor in Chief) and layout/design (done by a freelance designer), responsibility for carrying out or supervising all aspects of publishing a literary magazine.


    Key Responsibilities:
    • Maintain and comply with copyright regulations. Oversee print production of TIR and electronic production of its website. Make sure issues reach subscribers and bookstores.
    • Manage TIR's subscription fulfillment operations: provide customer service, organize renewal efforts, maintain subscription database.
    • Maintain online webstore. Send content to digital archives. Keep track of product inventory.
    • Oversee the day-to-day business and administrative functions of TIR, including answering queries to TIR's email address, preparing materials for bookfairs, representing TIR at bookfairs as needed (including at least one out-of-town trip per year, the AWP conference), maintaining online submission account (Submittable), and planning and publicizing events.
    • Design and place advertisements.
    • Develop strategies for increasing sales, subscriptions, and donations.

    Hybrid within Iowa: This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

    Education Required

    Bachelor's degree in literature or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. MFA or other advanced degree preferred.

    Required Qualifications
    • Minimum 3 years experience in publishing. Management/supervision experience required, especially of undergraduate and graduate students.
    • Extensive knowledge of contemporary literature, literary publishing, and/or literary magazines.
    • Extensive proficiency in written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
    • Extensive proficiency in Microsoft Office and Acrobat Pro.
    • Extensive proficiency in copyediting documents according to the Chicago Manual of Style.
    • Basic proficiency in layout and design principles.
    • Working proficiency in social media management: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.
    • Basic proficiency in Photoshop and/or InDesign.

    Desired Qualifications
    • Working proficiency in Filemaker Pro, Submittable, and website management.
    • Working proficiency in subscription management, including renewal efforts.
    • Working proficiency in E-newsletter management: Mailchimp or similar.
    • Experience in fundraising and grant writing.
