The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE ) at The Ohio State University invites applications for an open rank professional practice faculty appointment beginning as early as Fall 2025. This position will be affiliated with the Center for Software Innovation (CSI) and the Integrated Business & Engineering Honors Program, Software Innovation track (IBE-SI).

Position Overview

The recently established Center for Software Innovation at The Ohio State University is positioning the university and Ohio to be the epicenter for growth in the rapidly expanding global digital economy. CSI seeks to equip innovators with the skills, tools, and resources to build the digital economy and enable student education and access to the principles and practices of software innovation. The Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE) Honors Program is a challenging four-year program designed to help prepare the next generation of business and technology leaders to operate effectively across business and technical domains, and to learn an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving.

To support these and other efforts, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering invites applicants for a professional practice (non-tenure-track) faculty position at all ranks. We will consider all qualified applicants with expertise in software engineering and related areas, with particular interest in those who can teach courses on a broad range software-related topics. Examples of such courses are included below, for reference:

We are seeking candidates who would also be interested in development and teaching of access-for-all courses in Data and in AI, such as Data Wrangling, Prompt Engineering, and Introduction to Start Ups.

Successful candidates will demonstrate interest and ability to lead curriculum and degree program development, as well as initiate and sustain outreach activities to industry partners. Faculty members aligned with the CSI, are also expected to participate in a variety of scholarly activities that contribute to the CSI mission's overall success.

The position is open to applicants who may require sponsorship for a visa or other work authorization.

Performance Objectives

  • Contribute to teaching and curriculum development activities.
  • Teach and mentor students at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Meet with industry partners, individuals, and focus groups to understand the skillset students need for a successful career in their field.
  • Collaborate to develop hands-on experiential learning opportunities (e.g., lectures from industry professionals, workshops focused on application, and student project development).
  • Leading or participating in learning sessions that include the broader community.
  • Service and support to the digital innovation ecosystem.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required:

  • A Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering, or a closely related computing field. Ph.D. must be completed by the time of appointment.
  • Proven skills and experience in innovative software strategy, design, development, and launch.
  • Evidence of teaching and/or mentoring teams (students or employees) in the computing field.
  • Excellence in verbal and written communication.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills when working with both external and internal colleagues or interdisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated efforts in teaching, research, and/or outreach and engagement that reflect Ohio State's Shared Values.

Desired:

  • Experience with developing new courses and degree programs.
  • Experience with online teaching and programs, experiential teaching, informal learning, and/or outreach and engagement.
  • A record of high-quality research or development in the software area, gained in academia, industry, government, or national labs.
  • Clear plans to create, implement, and oversee engagement with industrial or government partners.
  • Potential for leadership in service, both to the profession and to the university.

  • Teaching portfolio should be limited to 5 pages and include:
    • A summary of teaching experience and responsibilities.
    • A list of courses and/or trainings taught (including course title, date, number of students, educational background of students), each with a very short description of the course and course goals.
    • A reflection on teaching philosophy, goals and activities undertaken to improve teaching and/or mentoring.
    • A discussion of your strategies for mentoring students with different cultural backgrounds and those belonging to groups identified by NSF as historically underrepresented in STEM.

  • Teaching Statement. Write 1-2 pages narrative that includes:
    • A personal vision for teaching and learning
    • A description of teaching strategies or approaches for which you received training or have implemented.
    • A description of the ways in which your professional experience will inform the creation of new courses, enhancement of existing courses, and other educational activities for students.

State mentoring skills you consider fundamental, including those necessary to effectively mentor students with different cultural backgrounds and those belonging to groups identified by NSF as historically underrepresented in STEM.

Computer Science and Engineering

One of the oldest computing programs in the country, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is a national leader in impactful computing research and education. We create, teach, and actualize the principles that connect computing and society while advancing the forefront of foundational computer science into various interdisciplinary realms. Department faculty include 56 tenure-track and 8 clinical-track faculty, with 16 ACM/IEEE Fellows and 31 CAREER Awards among past and present faculty. The department continues to raise its national and international research profile through aggressive recruiting and large-scale projects (e.g., two NSF AI Institutes and an NSF HDR Institute). The department will continue to invest in creative and team science activities leading to ever increasing strengths in both foundational and applied computer science.
