The Department of Afroamerican & African Studies (DAAS) at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) invites applications for an open-rank tenure track position in Global Black Urban Studies. We are interested in candidates from all disciplines who address in their scholarship and teaching Black social and cultural life within urban spaces. This position sits at the intersection of urban planning, urban design, and cultural, humanistic, and social inquiry, especially with respect to meanings of space and place and the theory and praxis of Black social and cultural movements.

We are seeking candidates who will contribute to the current strengths of our interdisciplinary community of scholars. DAAS is a rich unit that fosters research and teaching centered on the lives, experiences, cultures, histories, and societies of peoples of African descent on the continent of Africa and in diasporic communities in the United States and North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia. Our interdisciplinary curricula and scholarship span-but are not limited to-the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

This position is part of a cluster within the university's Anti-Racism Faculty Hiring Initiative with companion hires in the Taubman School of Architecture and Urban Planning, as well as in Digital Studies.

This is a university-year appointment with an expected start date of August 26, 2025. Interested applicants are required to hold a Ph.D. prior to the appointment. Applicants must demonstrate evidence of excellence in both teaching and research.

Applicants should provide:

  • Cover letter addressed to the Chair of the Black Urban Studies/Black Humanities Search Committee
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Statement of current and future research plans
  • Statement of teaching philosophy and experience (or a teaching portfolio containing such a statement)
  • Statement that demonstrates commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through scholarship/research, and/or teaching/mentoring, and/or service/engagement. There may be some overlap with your research proposal and teaching statements (1-3 pages).
  • Evidence of teaching excellence (i.e., student evaluations of teaching, course syllabi, teaching awards that can be parts of a teaching portfolio).
  • Two to three writing samples
  • List of three (3) recommenders
