Job Summary

The Research and Analytics unit within Institutional Analytics is essential to the synthesis of new research and methods to support the mission and strategic goals of Indiana University. Our team of highly skilled data analysts and engineers wrangle a myriad of institutional, state, federal, and other data sources; explore these datasets via data visualizations, traditional statistical techniques, and cutting-edge machine learning methods; and report the results of our analyses in static reports, interactive dashboards, and presentations to provide decision support and knowledge dissemination to a variety of stakeholders, including professional and scholarly organizations, academic departments, and the highest levels of Indiana University leadership on all campuses.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Assists with all steps of data preparation prior to analysis, assesses the quality and completeness of the data, recoding, imputing missing data, and performs data transformations.
  • Performs and reports on preliminary data discovery including creating data visualizations, exploring frequencies and distributions, preparing initial statistical analysis, and looking for interesting patterns and peculiarities in the data.
  • Assists with or oversees advanced statistical and/or machine learning analyses to the extent deemed appropriate in terms of the project and the skill level of the applicant.
  • Assists with or oversees the preparation of deliverables, which may include manually authored reports, reports generated in R markdown or a similar markdown language, Tableau visualizations, or presentations.
  • Provides routine updates on project progress via email, updates to our project tracking system, and virtual meetings.
  • Provides out-of-the-box insights and suggestions for the best ways to tackle projects.
  • Provides and accepts professional critique and analysis from colleagues to ensure that the team presents the highest quality work in terms of ethical considerations, data veracity, interpretation of findings, and appropriateness of tone/accessibility for the audience.
  • Alongside full-time staff members, meets with stakeholders to discuss data needs or analysis results.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University, majoring in Data Science, Statistics, or a relevant social sciences field (e.g., public policy, psychology, anthropology) with some background in statistics
Preferred
  • Graduate student majoring in Data Science, Statistics, or a relevant social sciences field (e.g., public policy, psychology, anthropology) with some background in statistics
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • Experience extracting, cleaning, and preparing data sets for analysis
Preferred
  • Professional experience in an applied research setting providing decision support to internal or external stakeholders
SKILLS

Required
  • Knowledge of R, Python, SAS, or similar languages used for statistical analysis and/or data science (preferably R)
  • Some knowledge of SQL
  • Strong understanding of basic concepts of applied statistics, such as sampling and sampling distributions, central tendency, statistical significance and hypothesis testing, and regression
  • Some combination of more advanced statistical knowledge and/or machine learning (preferably using R)
  • Ability to manage projects or portions of projects in a remote setting with little day-to-day supervision
  • Ability to provide and receive critique in a professional manner
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to a wide variety of audiences
Preferred
  • Experience with Tableau
