Unit Mission Statement:Highland's mission is to engage the public in learning about U.S. history through inclusive narratives of Highland and the people who lived on the property, with a focus on the period of James Monroe's ownership.
Position Summary:The Public Historian for James Monroe's Highland will contribute to the collaborative development of new site interpretation at James Monroe's Highland, in Albemarle County, Virginia. The position works from expertise in a field such as history, anthropology, or American studies. A significant portion of the position's responsibilities include the incorporation of narratives of slavery and the experiences of a descendant community of Highland. The position supports the initiatives and activities of the Highland descendant community and serves as staff support for the Highland Council of Descendant Advisors. In addition to their work with the Highland Council of Descendant Advisors, the public historian coordinates productive and supportive collaboration with other regional descendants and descendant organizations.
The Highland public historian will participate in public and scholarly dialogue about public history and the public humanities, potentially through local, state, and national organizations, and publication for general audiences and scholars. The public historian will participate in public scholarship through exhibition preparation and onsite teaching and serve as a resource for William & Mary students engaging with Highland. The position carries a 1:1 teaching load. One of these courses will be in African American public history or public humanities in alignment with James Monroe's Highland. The second course will be determined in collaboration with the Arts & Sciences unit in which the public historian is affiliated.
This is an 18-month, limited-term Public Historian position. If at the end of the 18-month term, the business needs support continuing the position, the position may be extended without the need for competitive recruitment.
