Research Scientist Intern, Inorganic Materials Chemistry (PhD)
Meta

Redmond, Washington
$0.00 - $100.00 per hour

Meta Reality Labs brings together a world-class team of researchers, developers, and engineers to create the future of virtual and augmented reality, which together will become as universal and essential as smartphones and personal computers are today. And just as personal computers have done over the past 45 years, AR and VR will ultimately change everything about how we work, play, and connect. We are developing all the technologies needed to enable breakthrough AR glasses and VR headsets, including optics and displays, computer vision, audio, graphics, brain-computer interface, haptic interaction, eye/hand/face/body tracking, perception science, and true telepresence. Key to all of these advancements will be the development of new optical materials that enable new ways to manufacture optical elements. This internship will focus on advancing optical materials development at Meta, specifically focusing on the synthesis and nanofabrication of solgel- and nanocomposite-based chemistries. Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Research Scientist Intern, Inorganic Materials Chemistry (PhD) Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with researchers and cross-functional partners including communicating research plans, progress, and results.
  • Publish research results and contribute to research that can be applied to Meta product development.
  • Design and implement coating materials used for optical device fabrication.
  • Synthesize, functionalize, and process novel inorganic materials in the laboratory, including nanocomposites and sol-gel materials.
  • Analyze material properties via a variety of in-house analytical techniques.
  • Transfer new materials to the engineering team and assure successful implementation of new materials and processes.
  • Collaborate with and support other researchers across various disciplines (process engineers, mechanical engineers, physicists).
  • Summarize and present research agenda, progress and results over the course of the intern project.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Optical Engineering or relevant technical field.
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
  • 2+ years experience in at least one of the following areas of optical or materials research: inorganic materials synthesis, inorganic materials characterization, photo-chemistry, optical materials.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience in an academic or industrial R&D setting.
  • Experience with sol-gel chemistry and/or nanoparticle synthesis.
  • Experience in characterization of inorganic materials, including via XPS, XRD, SEM and TEM.
  • Experience with optimization of material mechanical properties via microstructural design.
  • Experience in coating techniques or thin film chemistry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Intent to return to degree program after the completion of the internship/co-op.
  • Experience working and communicating cross functionally in a team environment.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications in high-impact journals, grants, fellowships and patents.
