Senior Paralegal - Claims Management

The Senior Paralegal - Claims Management, will be responsible for the day-to-day management, tracking and analysis of GFL's core claim segments as directed by the Senior Director, Claims Management. Core claims segments include Auto, Property, Workers' Compensation, General Liability, and Pollution.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform all elements of litigation case management, including file management, discovery, and trial activities.
• Utilize case calendaring system to track filings, provide strict oversight on deadlines, and appropriately distribute information.
• Utilize existing systems and procedures and/or establish new procedures to facilitate the organization and retrieval of documents by and for the outside attorneys, TPA and internal stakeholders.
• Lead discovery and witness preparation support efforts.
• Coordinate and oversee the tasks of the TPA, outside attorneys and team as needed on litigation matters and/or investigations in all phases of litigation from discovery through trial/arbitration/mediation.
• Proactively identify opportunities to improve systems and procedures, implementing new systems as appropriate.
• Attend mediations and trials, as needed.
• Responsible for reviewing initial reserves on litigated matters with GFL claims team.
• In partnership with GFL Claims team, timely coordinate with defense counsel/insureds/monitoring counsel to facilitate coverage, liability and damage analysis.
• Maintains at least a monthly diary of open cases
• Organize severe claim data and report information on a regular basis to Risk Management, Claims, Safety, and Operations.
• Isolate cases that are indefensible and need to be resolved.
• Coordinate with internal legal team and regularly reports to them on status and progress.
• Coordinate initial claims response including evidence hold and other required communication.
• Support the Claims department in review, investigation, and research of claims issues and completion of claims projects.
• Conforms to and operates within the internal policies, procedures, and systems relative to the claims department operations.
• Undertakes other claims related administrative duties as assigned by the Risk Department.

Knowledge & Skills

• Advanced knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and procedures of transportation claims and litigation management within a complex organization.
• Understanding of legal process, claims process and expectation, and reporting requirement in Canada and the United States.
• Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including communications that are clear and concise, use proper grammar and appropriate vocabulary.
• Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to work concurrently on a variety of projects with changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
• Strong analytical, research, and writing skills.
• Integrity and discretion to maintain confidentiality of employee and company data.
• Ability to travel.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office software products including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

Experience and Education

• Paralegal Degree required.
• Minimum of ten years of experience working as a litigation paralegal, preferably handling transportation litigation.
• Experience with all stages of litigation, including intake, discovery, and trial.
• Experience preparing for and attending trials/arbitrations/hearings/mediations.
• Transportation claims adjusting experience preferred.
• Adjuster licenses or the ability to obtain preferred.
