Job Description
The STAGES Sign Language Interpreter -CONTRACTOR is responsible for interpreting or transliterating all academic content to allow students who are D/HH to access instruction, communicate with other members of the school community, and participate in school-based activities. The scope of services and supports provided by the Educational Interpreter will be determined by the students' Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). The Educational Interpreter serves as a collaborative member of a team that supports students identified as D/HH in a virtual academic environment and are fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). The Sign Language Interpreter- Contractor may be asked to obtain licensure in multiple states and serve students across multiple schools.
This is an Independent Contractor position (1099).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.

  • Experience using one or more signing systems in an educational setting, including American Sign Language (ASL), Manually Coded English, Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE), and/or Finger Spelling
  • Interpret and transliterate content presented in the live, synchronous virtual academic setting as delineated in the assigned students' IEPs
  • Adapt language and materials to meet the individual needs of students with hearing loss
  • Collaborate with other members of the school community (e.g., general education teachers, special education teachers, caregivers, related service providers) to share information regarding students' progress and needs, as well as to ensure services are delivered in compliance with IEPs
  • Serve as an integral member of the IEP team and attend IEP meetings
  • Provide expressive and voice interpretation of classroom instruction, clarify curricular content, support work completion, and provide language support in small groups or during one-on-one interactions
  • Interpret for school activities outside of the virtual classroom, extracurricular activities, and meetings with caregivers
  • Adhere to professional standards as outlined in the Code of Ethics of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
  • Serve as a liaison between students who are D/HH, hearing peers, staff, community members, and/or caregivers
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with students, caregivers, and school staff
  • Be available to students, caregivers, and staff during designated work hours
  • Work from a professional home office environment, conducive to video and audio needs and a structured schedule
  • Must be self-motivated, dependable, creative, and passionate about meeting the needs of students
  • Prior experience supporting students identified as D/HH in the academic environment is desired but not required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum 1 year experience interpreting in educational environment and

Minimum 1 year experience providing interpreting services virtually

Certificates and Licenses:

National Interpreter Certification issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and/or

State specific educational interpreter licensure

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to work independently, with availability during typical school hours of at least 20 hours per week is required. Ability to maintain a professional home office without distraction during workday, typically 9 - 5 as defined by the school and time zone
  • Strong content and subject-matter knowledge
  • An ability to support and guide adults as well as students
  • Receptive to receiving coaching on a regular basis with administrators
  • Ability to embrace change and adapt to ensure excellent student outcomes
  • Ability to create and deliver staff development
  • Exceptionally strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to rapidly learn and adapt to new technologies and teaching platforms
  • MS365 Proficient
  • Ability to clear required background check

This position is remote and open to residents of the 50 states and D.C. This is an Independent Consultant position (1099).
