Job Description Summary
Provide specialized veterinary clinical care to all species housed in ULAR managed facilities. Under minimal supervision, triage and assess animal health, provide immediate care to emergency cases. Perform weekly satellite housing wellness checks in rodent facilities. Administer medications by oral, topical, and injectable routes of administration. Maintain animal health records. Utilize knowledge of pharmacology and drug calculations. Operate sterilization equipment and prepare surgical instrument packs. Perform facility cleaning, maintenance, stocking, and inventory. Provide care to critical animals in surgical recovery. Consult with clinical veterinary staff and laboratory personnel on treatment options. Collect specimens such as blood and feces and perform diagnostic testing on samples such as parasite checks and identification. Prepare bills for treatments and medications used to provide clinical care. Prepare daily treatment roster of on-going cases using the computer. Familiarity with IACUC protocols and assure investigator adherence to approved protocols and provide necessary documentation to IACUC. Hours for this position are 7:30a-4:30p, full-time/5 days per week. Holiday coverage on a rotating basis is required.

ULAR provides essential 24/7 services for the University of Pennsylvania. The ULAR Senior Veterinary Technician/Veterinary Anesthesia Technician Specialist position is designated as "essential" and you are expected to work when normal campus operations are suspended (e.g.: inclement weather) or if there is an emergency impacting ULAR. In addition, you may be expected to work outside of your regular schedule during peak activity periods (e.g.: overtime, weekends). To the extent possible, managers will provide timely notice of modified work schedules.

- Consult with clinical veterinary staff and laboratory personnel on clinical care treatment and anesthesia option
- Familiarity with IACUC protocols and assure investigator adherence to approved protocols.
- Assist with aseptic surgery, assure sterile conditions are maintained during procedures. Operate sterilization equipment and prepare surgical instrument packs. Maintain surgical facilities according to standard operating procedures.
- Provide care to critical animals in ICU. Triage and assess animal health, provide immediate care to emergency cases. Administer medications by oral, topical and injectable routes of administration. Maintain animal health records. Perform colony inventory and quarantine of newly arrived animals
- Collect specimens such as blood and feces and perform diagnostic testing on samples such as parasite checks and identification
- Prepare bills for treatments and medications used to provide clinical care. Prepare daily treatment roster of on-going cases using the computer
- Inventory, stock and maintain facilities involved in the clinical care of animals.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications- Graduation from an accredited animal health technology program or equivalent, with 1-2 or 2-3 years' experience working with animals in a research setting with primary responsibilities in animal anesthesia techniques, or equivalent combination of education or experience. AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level or a demonstrated commitment to attaining that certification within the time frame established by AALAS. The successful candidate will have the ability to respond to changing circumstances by being innovative and altering behavior to better fit different situations. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word programs. Ability to work l0am-7pm, Monday-Friday on a rotating basis.
